Storytime Guidelines

  • Priority for all programs goes to Norridge/Harwood Heights patrons.
  • Adults are encouraged to bring their children to one same-language storytime per week. Priority will be given to cardholders who have not attended storytime during any given week. Family Storytime is the exemption.
  • Seating is limited to: Baby & Toddler: 25 children, Junior: 35 children, Big Kids: 35 children, Family: 40 people
  • Children must be the appropriate age to attend storytime. Exceptions include siblings who are older than the age range for that storytime and infants in carriers. Your infant MUST remain in the carrier for the duration of storytime.
  • Please be on time. No priority will be given to latecomers.
  • Encourage your child to participate in all activities so they can get the most out of storytime.
  • If a child becomes disruptive, their parent will be asked to take them out of the Story Room, so they can calm down. Then they may re-enter. If after three breaks they are still having a bad day, we suggest they come back another time.
  • If you intend to leave the building during storytime, please inform your child and the library staff. You should make arrangements with another adult (not library staff) to be responsible for your child.
  • Parents set the example for their children. Please participate if you stay in the Story Room.
  • Staff reserves the right to settle any issues regarding residency, age and the application of these rules.
  • Please do not bring food or toys to storytime.

The Tick Tock Song

“The Tick Tock Song” is done in the beginning of every Baby, Toddler, and Junior storytime. During storytime, Mr. Duckie (or Pingwin in the Polish classes) jumps up from behind our storytime clock on the “Cuckoos.” It remains a favorite among parents and kids.

The song can be easily adapted for home use. Mr. Duckie (or even a clock) is not needed to have fun jumping and calling out “Cuckoo.” However, your child can follow along with the video.

Tick Tock Lyrics

Tick Tock, Tick Tock
I’m a little cuckoo clock
Tick Tock, Tick Tock
Now I’m chiming one o’clock
Cuckoo!

During storytime, we repeat song for two and three o’clock. The number of times “Cuckoo” is said relates to what time it is. For example, for two o’clock, “Cuckoo” is said twice.

Tick Tock Directions

For Babies: Adult sits or stands, holding a baby face out. As adult sings the song, rock child back and forth. Adult lifts or bounces the child up on the “Cuckoo.”
For Older Kids: Child stands and rocks back and forth as the song is sung. Child jumps on the “Cuckoo.”

Skinnamarink

“Skinnamarink” is our goodbye song in our Baby, Toddler, and Junior storytimes. It can be fun to sing at home, or a great tool to use to help your young child leave behind their comfort toy or friend/parent.

Opening Refrain

Skinna marinky dinky dink (hold right elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
Skinna marinky doo (hold left elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
I (point to eyes or heart)
Love (cross hands over heart)
You (point to someone else)
Repeat refrain twice before moving on to Verse.

Verse

I love you in the morning (hands touching overhead, arms making a hoop, rock slightly side to side)
and in the afternoon  (lower hoop to chest height, rock slightly side to side)
I love you in the evening (hoop now forms a cradle at waist level, rock slightly side to side)
underneath the moon (hands meet above head in original hoop position, rock slightly side to side)

Closing Refrain

Skinna marinky dinky dink (hold right elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
Skinna marinky doo (hold left elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
I (point to eyes or heart)
Love (cross hands over heart)
You (point to someone else)

First repeat Refrain three times.

  • After first time through: [I love your singing]
  • After second time through: [You’re all terrific]
  • After third time through: [We’ll see you next time] (wave goodbye)

Skinna marinky dinky dink (hold right elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
Skinna marinky doo (hold left elbow, wave right hand bye bye)
I (point to eyes or heart)
Love (cross hands over heart)
You, (put right hand out)
too! (put left hand out)
boo (bring fingers of right hand to lips)
boo (bring fingers of left hand to lips)
be do (blow kiss goodbye)
